18th November, 1926 : Nothing but embarrassment has resulted from Mr Bernard Shaw’s refusal of the Nobel Prize money of £7,000 awarded to him a year ago. The Royal Swedish Academy cannot dispose of the money except to him and he has been deluged with begging letters. Exasperated by this impasse, Mr Shaw has declared: “I can forgive Alfred Nobel for having invented dynamite, but only a fiend in human form could have invented the Nobel Prize!”
