NOTHING NEW UNDER THE SUN (ALMOST)

19th November, 1919 : The US Senate today voted against ratification of the Versailles Treaty, which ended the war and established the League of Nations. This is severe setback for President Wilson, who has campaigned heavily for it. The Senate Foreign Relations Committee suggested many amendments and the Republican Senator Henry Cabot Lodge has offered 14 reservations. The principal one concerned Article Ten, which binds signatories to come to the aid of member states if they are attacked. Many Senators felt it deprived Congress of its power to declare war.
