NOTHING NEW UNDER THE SUN (ALMOST)

21st November, 1910 : Extraordinary scenes are reported from the railway station at Astopov, where Leo Tolstoy died yesterday after lying ill there ever since his secret departure from his estate at Yasnaya Polyana. Peasants are flocking to pay homage. It appears that Count Tolstoy had quarrelled with his wife, Countess Sophie, to whom he made over his fortune while he lived in peasant style on his estate. He took with him his daughter, Tatiana, to whom his last words were spoken. Pushing aside the doctors, he said to her:”There are millions of people suffering in the world. Why there are so many looking after me?”
