22nd November, 1958 : The Menzies Government swept back to power in the national elections today with a majority of at least 26 seats in the House of Representatives and gaining control of the Senate. The result is a triumph for the Prime Minister, Bob Menzies, who has now won five successive elections. Equally, the Menzies victory has left Labor supporters stunned, and the Party in possibly worst shape since the defeat of the Chifley Government in 1949.
