NOTHING NEW UNDER THE SUN (ALMOST)
2nd December, 1956 : Cuba’s President Batista today claimed that his planes had killed the rebel leader, Fidel Castro, and his two brothers in a raid on Oriente province. Castro’s rebellion began with apparently suicidal frontal attack on the Moncada army post, killing 100 soldiers on 26th July, 1953. He returned by yacht from Mexico last year with 80 followers. Wearing “26 de Julio” armbands, they have been fighting a guerrilla action since.
