3rd December, 1959 : Nearly 300 people are feared dead today after a dam collapsed and washed away part of a town on the French Riviera. A 15-foot-high wall of water, mud and boulders swept down the valley into Frejus, where people warned two days ago that flood-water from recent storms had caused cracks in the bottom of the Malpasset Dam. The warnings went unheaded and within minutes the town was devastated. As troops dug out children’s bodies from the mud, an official inquiry began.
