5th December, 1959 : China today pardoned 33 so called war criminals, including former Emperor Pu Yi, who reigned as a child from 1908 until 1912. Peking Radio said that after ten years of reform through labour, the criminals “repented and acknowledged their crimes and showed that they are turning over a new leaf”. Pu Yi was installed by Japan as the puppet Emperor of Manchukuo in 1932. After testifying for the Russians at the Tokyo war crimes trial, he was returned to China and held for collaboration with Japan.
