10th December, 1949 : Bob Menzies is back in power and socialism in Australia has been rejected. That is the outcome of today’s general elections, which have aroused passions at home and abroad. The Liberal-Country Party coalition has won 72 voting seats inn the expanded House of Representatives, Labor 48. There is one independent. Labor retains a majority of six in the Senate, but Menzies expects it to be “reasonable”. Conservatives have hailed the result as a victory over socialism, which Menzies has vowed to halt.
