NOTHING NEW UNDER THE SUN (ALMOST)

14th December, 1911 : Norwegian explorer Roald Amundsen has won the race to the South Pole, a goal sought by Britons since the beginning of this century. In a message from the Antarctic, Amundsen said he had seen no sign of Captain Robert Scott and his party although he agreed that “it is exceedingly likely that he did reach the Pole – later, if not sooner, than myself”. In his graphic account of the journey of nearly 2,000 miles at over 10,000 feet, Amundsen makes light of the mountain ranges, treacherous ice and crevasses which he, his four comrades and their dog teams had to cross before making the final dash to the Pole.
