december memories / 20

20th December, 1924 : Paroled after serving eight months for high treason, Adolf Hitler, leader of the Nazis, an extreme nationalist party whose members wear brown shirts, says he plans to publish a book he dictated to a colleague, Rudolf Hess, while in Landsberg fortress. His gaolers treated him ass a honoured guest and gave him a room of his own with a view overlooking the river Lech; visitors flocked to Landsberg to pay him homage and bring him gifts, in spite of the fact that his attempted putsch in a Munich beer-hall last year was a complete fiasco.
