NOTHING NEW UNDER THE SUN (ALMOST)

23rd December, 1948 : General Tojo, Japan’s Prime Minister during the war, and six other wartime leaders, were hanged by the American Army at Sugamo Prison in Tokyo early this morning. Accused of whipping up a militaristic mood in Japan and inciting attacks on her Asian neighbours as well as on America, they were convicted of “crimes against peace and responsibility for atrocities” by an international tribunal last month. Some of the condemned recited Buddhist prayers as they walked to the gallows.
