29th December, 1921 : The Australian Labor Party wants to “socialise” industry and make the nation fully self-reliant. After months of debate, the Party has decided on a new platform that envisages the nationalisation of all banks and main industries, and the transfer of their control into the hands of the workers. The nationalised industries would be run by boards on which workers would also sit. The platform has alarmed even some Labor MPs and Party leaders have had to give assurances that socialism would be realised by constitutional means, and that some private industry would at least be tolerated. The Party also aims to win unlimited powers for the Commonwealth at the expense of the States.
