NOTHING NEW UNDER THE SUN (ALMOST)

30th December, 1905 : A revolt in Moscow by workers and students is being crushed by Government forces, with several thousand casualties. After a week of bitter street fighting across barricades in parts of old Moscow, which included use of artillery, it is clear that the battle has begun between order and anarchy, revolution and the Government. The first shots were fired by the insurgents who assembled in a school and proclaimed a new “provisional government”. Their original plan was to get hold of weapons, provoke a mutiny in St Petersburg and establish a revolutionary government there. A report that 10,000 people are dead or wounded may be on the high side.
