7th January, 1982 : Spain has agreed to lift its 12-year siege of Gibraltar in return for talks on the colony’s future. The deal, announced today after meeting in London between the Spanish Premier, Calvo Sotelo, and Mrs Thatcher, means that Spain will no longer demand the return of “the Rock” on the understanding that Britain lift its unstated but very real opposition to Spain’s NATO and EEC membership.
