january memories / 12

12th January, 1962 : Indonesia is giving contradictory signs of its intentions in West New Guinea, at once assuring Australia that it will not attack the Dutch-controlled territory and yet vowing elsewhere to pursue, if necessary by force of arms, its claim. The Dutch Government has said it would be prepared to fight should the Indonesians attack the territory. Dutch officials will not say how many troops are stationed in West New Guinea, but indicated that the forces are sufficient to repel any assault. No fresh troops have as yet been sent there in response to the crisis.
