NOTHING NEW UNDER THE SUN (ALMOST)

26th January, 1942 : Several thousand infantry troops of the United Sates Army landed in Northern Ireland today. They are the first US troops to set foot in Europe – other than Iceland – since the Great War when the American Expeditionary Force arrived in France to reinforce the Allies. Today’s landing was a carefully kept secret. Even the band of Royal Ulster Rifles were not told where they were going, or why. Nevertheless they managed a creditable version of “Star-Spangled Banner” as the first ship docked.
