27th January, 1952 : This morning, as dawn broke over the city, the full horror of yesterday’s riots in Cairo, in which 17 British people were murdered or burned to death, was revealed. The Turf Club, to which all the British elite in Cairo belonged, was almost totally destroyed, along with paintings of its historic members like Kitchener, Cromer and Allenby. Shepheard’s Hotel, one of the most famous hotels in the world, was very seriously damaged. British troops in the Canal Zone are on full alert.
