4th February, 1902 : Russian students are now leading the political opposition to the Czarist government. More than 30,000 are on strike throughout the country, supported by many among the more liberal of their professors. They are protesting at “temporary rules” giving the Government new powers to curb activities of student organisations. These were introduced by General Vannovsky, the Czar’s Minister of Education, on December 22, 1901. The Government fears that revolutionaries among students are planning violence.
[Professors for freedom? Oh, what one would give for those good old times.]
