february memories / 13

13th February, 1923 : There are 10,000 Ottoman Greeks huddled in misery in barracks in Scutari, living in the most appalling conditions. These unfortunate people, all Turkish citizens of Greek origin, have been driven from their homes on the Black Sea coast and are being held to await deportation to Greece. Greece has already taken a million refugees and can take no more, so for three weeks these people have waited, wrenched from prosperity to a condition close to death. Smallpox has broken out. The only food is bread, from American Near East Relief.
