17th February, 1926 : Modern young women are turning to drink and drugs in a desperate bid to cope with their hectic lives, a doctor warned today. Dr J S Russell told the London Institute of Hygiene that an abnormal lifestyle of nights of frivolity followed by days of excitement, coupled with tobacco and alcohol, strained the nervous systems. “Scarcely has the age of 20 been reached before the lines that belong to the face of a woman of middle age have become evident in such girls.” His words follow a recent warning from another eminent doctor, who condemned the current craze for the willowy figure.
