february memories / 22

22nd February, 1910 : It has been reported that a Chinese army has occupied Lhasa, the capital of the mountainous territory of Tibet. Panic has griped the city’s inhabitants as the soldiers continue their looting. The violence has compelled the Dalai Lama to flee to India. He returned from exile in Peking only two months ago, having fled there after the arrival in Tibet of a contingent of British troops in 1904. It appears that, before leaving Peking, he was able to reach an arrangement with the Chinese on their future role in Tibet, but that he could not sustain it.

[It has been always hard to have a sustainable arrangement with Chinese rulers.]
