24th February, 1903 : A detachment of the British field force operating against the “Mad” Mullah in Italian Somaliland struck from the Indian Ocean port of Obbia today. Commanded by General Manning, who is accompanied by Count Lovateli, the Italian representative, the flying column includes Punjab Mounted Infantry and the Camel Corps. The Mullah, Mohammed bin Abdullah, who claims to posses supernatural powers, first caused trouble when he began raiding tribes friendly to the British. Calling himself Mahdi, or Messiah, he believes he is destined to convert others to Islam. After clashes with the British he fled into Italian territory and lay low for two years until the raids began again recently.

[More than a hundred years later Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad who claims to be descended from Mohammed, said that during his UN General Assembly address in September 2011, “he felt there was a light around him and that the attention of the world leaders in the audience was unblinkingly focused upon him”. ]
