march memories / 05

5th March, 1946 : The Federal Government has seized control of meat supplies in Melbourne in an attempt to beat the black market. Graziers are urging the Newmarket Producers’ Association to press the Government to lift its ceiling price on meat and allow an open market. But the Government has stepped up its campaign by appointing extra staff to the prices branch. As from tomorrow, all meat slaughtered in the Melbourne area and all dead meat coming into the area will be seized and distributed under Government control.

The state  drums up dishonest moral cant to cloak its extortions. Citizens and Markets come and go, but government bureaucratic power is forever.]
