march memories / 15

15th March, 1939 : Herr Hitler entered Prague as a conqueror last night and raised hiss standard on the Hradcany Castle, ancient palace of the Bohemian kings and residence of the President of the now vanished Republic of Czechoslovakia. It is less than six months since the Nazi dictator declared that Germany had no more territorial claims in Europe. The German invasion followed only two days after Hitler presented Prague with an ultimatum which included the following demands: “Complete independence of Slovakia and Ruthenia. Formation of a new Czech government without Mr Beran, the Premier and General Syrovy, the Defence Minister. Payment to Germany of gold and foreign exchange.”

[Was it all about gold?]
