march memories / 26

26th March, 1931 : A most appalling orgy of bloodshed is raging through the city of Cawnpore in India today, following the outbreak of communal rioting. The riots started when Moslem shopkeepers refused to obey the Hindu demand for a “hartal”, a cessation of all work, in memory of the three agitators who were hanged in Lahore yesterday for murder. After the first onslaught it was the Moslems who were the most bloodthirsty. Gangs of them paraded the streets and pounced on Hindu wayfarers, bludgeoning them to death. Shocked eyewitnesses reported seeing women and children have their throats cut and being thrown into drains. It is believed that more than 200 people have died.
