NOTHING NEW UNDER THE SUN (ALMOST)
2nd April, 1959 : Escaping an army of Chinese pursuers, the Dalai Lama has reached safety in India. He crossed the border into Assam, and yesterday 7,000 Tibetans gave him a noble and moving welcome at the small West Bengal town of Siliguri. After tearful reunions with relatives and a reception by a long line of officials, the Tibetan leader mounted a blue and white dais and simply smiled as silk scarves thrown by the crowd formed a white mist in the air. Then he left for New Delhi where he will meet with Mr Nehru to work out the terms under which he will live in India. While welcoming the Dalai Lama, it is unlikely that the Indians will risk Chinese anger by allowing him to be politically active.
[The appeasement did not help much. China attacked India in October 1962]
