4th April, 1979 : Zulfikar Ali Bhutto, the deposed Premier of Pakistan, was hanged in the early hours of today and buried before news of his death reached his followers. Convicted of the murder of a political opponent, Mr Bhutto is widely viewed as the victim of a judicial murder set up by the military ruler, General Zia. The news of his death brought thousands of demonstrators on to the streets screaming for revenge against Zia. Mourners attending a prayer meeting were whipped into a frenzy of sorrow and anger when they were told that, as he stood on the scaffold with the hangman’s noose around his neck, his last words were “O Lord, help me, for I am innocent”.

[Somewhat mundane death for a Pakistani politician, especialy when compared to that of his nemesis, General Zia, who died in a mysterious C-130 Hercules crash in 1988. All the usual suspects, KGB, CIA, Mossad, Pakistan’s Inter Services Intelligence Agency were blamed at some stage, and we cannot overlook a Muslim angle – “the pilot of the C-130, Wing Commander Mash’hood Hassan, had previously confided that he hated Zia, and held him responsible for the murder of a local religious figure, saying that “The day Zia flies with me, that will be his last flight]
