april memories / 10

10th April, 1928 : Premier Mustafa Kemal of Turkey has taken another revolutionary step in his efforts to drag his backward nation into the western world. From now Turkish schools will teach the A to Z of the Roman alphabet rather instead of the Alif-Yen of the Arabic. It is expected that in 15 years time the Arabic script will disappear from public use. The official reason given for this fundamental change is that Turkish illiteracy stems mainly from the difficulty of learning Arabic. But another important reason is that it will cut the links between Turkish and Arabic cultures.

[There is no longer any need to drag them west. They seem to march voluntarily; 5.2 million already there – and drag the Arabic “culture” with them.]
