13th April, 1979 : Thousands of whooping and stamping Ugandans lined the 20-mile route from Entebbe Airport to the capital Kampala as Yusuf Lule returned from exile to become President after the Tanzanian-backed overthrow of Idi Amin. Arriving in the war-torn capital, where shops and offices had been looted, Mr Lule, aged 57 and a former vice-chancellor of Kampala’s Makerere University, went directly to the Parliament building to take the oath of office beneath the Ugandan flag. He said: “We must not indulge in the evil acts of the regime we have removed. Respect for life and individual rights must be paramount.”
