april memories / 17

17th April, 1934 : Leon Trotsky, the exiled Russian revolutionary, is homeless again today after the French cancelled his political asylum. He had been living secretly in a villa near Paris for six months, when he was meant to be in Corsica. Trotsky’s whereabouts came to light when the police entered the house of a man called Sodoroff on orders from the local Mayor, who had became curious about the large volume of mail the address was receiving. The police, having climbed through the barbed fence surrounding the house, found Trotsky with plans for an organisation called the Fourth International, which urged the overthrow of existing governments.
