april memories / 18

18th April, 1937 : Of the estimated 300,000 Aborigines at the time of white man’s arrival in Australia, only 60,000 are left. What can be done to help these few is now being discussed by the Commonwealth and State Protectors of Aborigines. They have asked the Government to stop the trade in opium in the north of the country that is leading to the addiction of many blacks. The protectors see the greatest hope, at least for half-castes, in their full integration into Australian society, and they have suggested education schemes for the young so that they will be able to work and live alongside whites.

[Sounds like a good plan. Pity nobody ever tried it. ]
