27th April, 1941 : The Germans marched into Athens yesterday and the swastika is flying over the Acropolis. Advance units of motorcyclists entered the city in the morning and were followed by heavy mechanised detachments, which had overcome the British rearguard on the road from Thebes. The Greek newspapers carried one last message of independence before the Nazis arrived: “Greeks! Be worthy of your history and stand side by side, proud and dignified. The world recognises the bravery and the victories of our army and recognises also our rights. We have done our duty.”
