1st May, 1929 : An inquiry will be held into the disappearance for 13 days of the Southern Cross and its four-man crew, led by Charles Kingsford Smith. The bodies of two other airmen who died searching for Smith’s party were found late last month in the desert west of Alice Springs. The tragic end met by flier Keith Anderson and his mechanic Bobby Hitchcock, whose small Westland III aircraft was forced down with engine trouble, has fuelled claims that Smith staged his disappearance to attract publicity. Smith, who was found in Western Australia only shortly after Anderson and Hitchcock, has denied the allegations.
