To your health!

…from the quill of Antisthenes the Younger

The attention of the media finally turned to one of the many trade unions running agog in Australia. Somehow the usual blaming of the Opposition Leader Abbott does not work any more. Symbiotic relationship of corrupt the Australian Labor Party and corrupt unions produced corruption which would please Jimmy Hoffa or Hussein Obama.

The situation is so bad that even The Sydney Morning Herald‘s Kate McClymont wrote: -The interim report into the procurement processes of the Health Services Union paints a scathing picture of a union which has spent millions of dollars on goods and services without going to tender or even obtaining comparative prices. – – -

It reveals that a computer company called United Edge, part-owned by the union’s boss Michael Williamson, received $1.3 million per year from April 2008 until September last year. – – – Communigraphix, the company at the centre of the allegations that it provided kickbacks in the form of credit cards to Mr Williamson and then HSU general secretary Craig Thomson, is revealed to have received $3.44 million from the union over the period March 2007 until September 2011.

Access Focus, which is run by a close friend of the union’s procurement officer has received more than $5 million from the union since October 2007. Access Focus provides consultancy services as well as union memorabilia.

Canme, which is run by Mr Williamson’s wife’s Julianne, has received $384,625 between December 2005 and June 2009.- – -The report was also critical of the average $600,000 a year spent on union officials’ credit cards.- – -

- – -Neither Mr or Mrs Williamson co-operated with his investigation, although they provided written statements through lawyers. Mr Williamson and Mr Thomson have previously denied any wrongdoing. [ Health Services report reveals where union millions went

With more than half a million a year to spend, one hopes that the fearless fighters for workers’ rights toasted their thus far docile membership with a decent champagne.

Now finally somebody tries to blow a whistle on the generous whistle-blower Kathy Jackson:

On behalf of union members who’ve had a gutful and aren’t going to take it any more, HSU member Daniel Govan has charged HSUeast Executive President Kathy Jackson and her sidekick Deputy General Secretary Marco Bolano with gross misbehaviour and gross neglect of duty under HSU rules with a view to removing them from office.

A theatre technician and HSU Victoria union member of many years standing, Govan says: The HSU is in terminal condition because of the mismanagement, rampant corruption and wrongdoing of a few, very well-paid and cynical officials.”

Our union is so down and dirty that even the one complaining loudest about corruption has some very serious issues to answer herself. Maybe the best depressing aspect of being in the HSU is that the self-appointed whistle-blower is well-known among Victorian HSU members of being engaged in the same activities of which she complains.”

That’s why I’m blowing the whistle on Kathy Jackson and cosy, conservative cabal over which she presides.”

Members are out of pocket not just because our union leadership spends our money inappropriately but also because they are so thoroughly pre-occupied with fighting each other that they have neglected members on the basics, like our EBA and dealing with individual grievances.”

HSU Victoria is in a state of crisis under Kathy Jackson and Marco Bolano.”

While I welcome the removal of Michael Williamson, and hope he is replaced soon, if he is replaced by Kathy Jackson, as some Sydney shockjocks seem to be pushing, Victorian HSU members are well aware we would be going from the frying pan into the fire, that’s why I’ve charged Jackson and Bolano with multiple counts of breaches of union rules and am urging their removal from office” Govan said.

Not to worry, Fairwork Australia will fairly investigate it all. Reliable comrades can expect a confidential report in three years time.

About Antisthenes

A Greek philosopher, a pupil of Socrates. Led a revolt, with Diogenes, against the demands of the city-state and the sophistication of life. Accepted the interrelation of knowledge, virtue, and happiness; and sought the ideal condition for happiness in return to primitivism and self-sufficiency. Rejected all social distinctions as based on convention, scorned orthodox religion as a fabrication of lies, and studied early legends and animal life in order to arrive at a true understanding of natural law. The individual was free and self-sufficient when he was master of his passions, secure in his intelligence, impervious to social or religious demands, and satisfied with the poverty of a mendicant. Needless to say, a person who on the Fog of Chaos adopted the Athenian philosopher's name has nothing whatsoever in common with him.

Five years too late: The allegedly corrupt Health Services Union East branch has been paying $1.25 million a year to a company that appears to be uncontactable, and for goods or services that no officer of the union is prepared to identify.

The Australian this week found the official “principal place of business” of Access Focus was abandoned by its sole occupant five years ago…

Senior HSU East officials, including national secretary Kathy Jackson and acting deputy general secretary Gerard Hayes, told The Australian they had no idea what goods or services Access Focus provided—or even that a contract existed with such a company—until corruption allegations were revealed last year…

Despite questions from The Australian over three days, the media consultant to HSU East who deals with corruption allegations, Catherine Kennedy, failed to provide any information on exactly what the union received for the payments.

There are no non-corrupt unions in Australia, face it.
