16th May, 1971 : Egyptians poured into the streets of Cairo today to celebrate President Anwar Sadat’s broadcast announcement that he had defeated an attempt to overthrow him. Thousands of people demanded the death penalty for those “heads of sedition and conspiracy” plotting coup. Sadat is moving quickly to consolidate his hold on the country. The rebels, led by Vice-President Ali Sabry, opposed his plan for a political solution to the conflict with Israel. Among the purged Cabinet members and senior officials are Sharawy Gomaa, the Interior Minister, and General Mohammad Fawiz, War Minister. The heads of both of the Egyptian intelligence services have also been replaced.

[Egyptians always have a cause to celebrate; head here, head there..]
