28th May, 1923 : A drug agent, James McEwan, was jailed for six months today on a charge of selling cocaine to women in the slums of Melbourne. Police told the City Court that McEwan was carrying 12 packets of white powder. He told police he bought the drug from a chemist in Footscray and sold it for 2/- a packet. Police said drug addicts in Melbourne had been using cocaine extensively for the past 10 years.

[So next year it would be 100 years – a cause for celebration?]
