NOTHING NEW UNDER THE SUN (ALMOST)

5th June, 1925 : The Arbitration Commission today deregistered the Federated Seamen’s Union and cancelled the employment awards of its many members following the union’s refusal to man Australian shipping. The president of the union, Tom Walsh, defied an order by Mr Deputy President Webb to provide crews for two steamers in Sydney. Mr Walsh said the union felt it was wasting its time in court and would take full responsibility for defying its orders. The dispute between the seamen and shipowners has disrupted shipping since the beginning of the year.
