7th June, 1951 : Two British diplomats, who served in sensitive posts in the Washington Embassy, have vanished in circumstances suggesting they may have been Soviet spies. Donald MacLean, aged 38, was First Secretary in Washington before becoming head of the American Department of the Foreign Office. Guy Burgess, aged 40, was for eight months Second Secretary in Washington. They disappeared from London two weeks ago. Police in Britain, France, Germany and Austria have been asked to search for them, and enquiries have been made in Finland and other countries bordering on the Soviet bloc. The US Secretary of State, Dean Acheson, said it would be “quite a serious matter” if Burgess and MacLean were to turn out to be Soviet sympathisers.
