NOTHING NEW UNDER THE SUN (ALMOST)
11th June, 1954 : An aerial search party has found a new Shangri-La in remote New Guinea – more than 100,000 people isolated from the world by sheer limestone cliffs more than 12,000 feet high. The region is densely populated and full of unsuspected rivers and valleys, according to the exploration director. It has been thought for some time that there were people in the area, but the party was surprised to find so many and such a high state of land cultivation. An Administration spokesman said it might be Christmas before a ground party could reach the villages.
