15th June, 1924 : The first power from Victoria’s new electricity generation station at Yallourn, in Gippsland, has been switched to Melbourne, providing cheaper power for industry and a guaranteed supply for the city through winter. Yallourn generators are fuelled by brown coal fields of Gippsland whose reserves are estimated to be sufficient for thousands of years. Yallourn is the first major project of Victorian State Electricity Commission.
