june memories / 16

16th June, 1964 : Sentenced to life imprisonment for sabotage and plotting to overthrow the South African Government, Nelson Mendela was flown from Pretoria to Cape Town and taken out to Robben Island in Table Bay. Icy waters and swift-running currents make the island virtually escape proof. Mendela heard his sentence without visible emotion. As he was escorted from the building a crowd of Africans ran along chanting “We have the strength” and making raised fist salutes.

[A Breivik-like?]
