NOTHING NEW UNDER THE SUN (ALMOST)

18th June, 1928 : An American woman brought her seaplane down in a South Wales estuary and so became the first woman to fly the Atlantic. Miss Amelia Earhart, 29 left Newfoundland at 2.51 p.m. yesterday and battled against terrible weather across the Atlantic to arrive near Llanelli at 12.40 p.m. today. Her fuel supply was so low she had to throw out equipment to stay airborne, but she stepped out looking relaxed in a woollen coat and brightly hued bandeau. Many thought the aircraft had crashed when it hit the water and several men threw themselves into estuary fully clothed in a bid to reach the plane.
