NOTHING NEW UNDER THE SUN (ALMOST)

25th June, 1955 : The spread of the “Cargo Cult” mentality among the natives of New Guinea is causing concern to the territory’s administration, and in some areas has led to outbreaks of violence. The cults have stemmed from a belief that the products of industrial civilisation, such as motor cars, aeroplanes and firearms will one day be delivered to the tribes-people. Often, as a consequence, all productive work stops while the natives await their reward, to be delivered from the sky.

[Cargo Cult mentality spread and gave rise to the Green Party in Australia, whose adherents believe that somehow the omnipotent government will provide and that no productive work is needed.]
