26th June, 1957 : The headless body of Royal Navy frogman Commander Lionel “Buster” Crabb has been found in the sea near Chichester Harbour, ending speculation that the former submariner was being held by the Soviet navy. Crabb’s underwater activities close to visiting Russian ships in Portsmouth Harbour caused a major diplomatic and political row just over a year ago. In a statement, Crabb’s mother insisted that her son had died “as he had lived, in the service of his own country and of no other”.
