NOTHING NEW UNDER THE SUN (ALMOST)

29th June, 1968 : With over 1,000 Russian tanks and 75,000 troops waiting just across the border, Soviet and Czech leaders met today in the small frontier village Cierna pri Czope to try to resolve their differences over the “Prague Spring”. While Alexander Dubcek, the Czech leader, talks of remaining a loyal Soviet ally while giving socialism a human face, Leonid Brehznev, the Soviet leader, claims American spies are in Czechoslovakia to prepare for a west German invasion. So Brehznev is demanding that large Soviet forces should be allowed into Czechoslovakia to protect it against a Western threat.

[The debate was somehow onesided]
