8th August, 1925 : More than 40,000 members of the Ku Klux Klan marched through Washington today. A ceremony afterwards, however, was cancelled due to heavy rain. Ku Klux Klan is a secret society dedicated to preserving white supremacy in America, and to opposing foreign influences, especially that of the Roman Catholic Church. After the Civil War, the Klan terrorised newly-freed Negroes in the South. Disbanded in 1869, it was revived in 1915. Recently the Klan has been more political and has attracted many members from outside the former Confederacy.
