august memories / 27

27th August, 1970 : The Federal Government has today bluntly declared it will not recognise claims of Aborigines to traditional land. Aboriginal squatters claim part of the Northern Territory station, Wave Hill, but Government decision is that, even if the owners, Vesteys, relinquish it, it will not be reallocated to the Aborigines.

[In 1966, the indigenous station workers staged a walk-off in protest against oppressive labour practices. In 1975 the Whitlam Labor government much of the land was returned to the so called Gurindji people.]
