8th September, 1926 : Grave news from the Yangtse River front in the Chinese civil war reached London yesterday. The “Red” army of General Chiang Kai-shek’s Kuomintang has captured Hankow, an important city and a treaty port. The southern Reds also took Wuchang on the opposite bank and Hangyang, the greatest arsenal in China. There is now a danger that they may soon control the whole of China as far as Peking.

In a gallant action Royal Navy gunboats rescued five British merchant officers held by 600 Chinese soldiers on board a ship in Yangtse. In the fight 13 British sailors died
