13th September, 1916 : The taste of victory, said a war correspondent at British HQ today, was like a strong drug to the men’s hearts, so that “they laughed even while the blood was streaming down their faces”. These were the infantry men who went into a battle on the Somme with a new weapon, conceived and built in strictest secrecy under the code name “Tank”. This morning, tanks rolled over The German lines, scattering machine-gunners, crashing through strong points and on one occasion demolishing a sugar refinery the enemy had turned into a redoubt. These motor monsters, as men call them, have transformed the whole character of the war and prisoners are saying:”Now Germany is kaput.”
