14th September, 1901 : President William McKinley died early today in Buffalo, New York, of wounds inflicted by a Polish anarchist, Leon Czolgosz, on September 6, while he was opening an exhibition. The Vice-President Mr Roosevelt, on a climbing trip in Adirondacks, covered the 440 miles to Buffalo at high speed by horse-drawn buckboard and special locomotive and took the oath of office only about twelve hours after President McKinley died. McKinley is the third president to have been assassinated.
